Nikon SB-700 - because I'm worth it

I'm actually not worth it - yet, anyway - but I'm glad I bought it. Using a proper flash has given me much, MUCH greater flexibility and quality in my shots, yet I can still see how they differ from professional photography - the shots I took of my family last weekend are superb, yet they're clearly high quality snapshots rather than professional portraits. OMG I NEED UMBRELLAS AND BACKDROPS AND LIGHTBOXES AND A TRIPOD AND WHY DO I HAVE SUCH A FUCKING EXPENSIVE HOBBY

so I want to do portraits

and I want to shoot in low light. So I'm considering getting a Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8 G for my D5000 (it has to be an AF-S - the camera body doesn't have an autofocus motor so you need to have one in the lens). There is a cost consideration - the equivalent f1.4 is twice the price. Is it worth it?
Then I'll need a flash, and a tripod, and people willing to sit still while I make them look pretty. WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE SUCH EXPENSIVE HOBBIES?!?
